Bulgaria has over 40,000 archaeological and historical sites, many of which are equal to those found in Turkey and Greece - just without the crowds.
The Great Koprivshtitsa Folklore Festival Tour
5 – 9 August 2021
Every five years the beautiful small mountain town of Koprivshtitsa is host to a
veritable feast of folklore - costumes, music, singing and dancing. The colourful
performances take place on the hills above the town by day, and in the evening
there are often impromptu performances in the cobbled streets and squares. It has
been described as a cross between a pop festival and a medieval fair, certainly it's
an experience not to be missed!
The Koprivshtitsa extension after the Folklore Festival
9 – 12 August 2021
A natural history walking tour based still at your festival hotel. Your experienced mountain guide leader will take you on excursions to beautiful mountain meadows, small streams, lovely mixed forests and high ridges for some stunning views. We shall be looking for mountain flowers, wildlife, birds and those butterflies, still on the wing. The extension will be on half board and we'll have a vehicle at our disposal.
The Ancient Treasures of Bulgaria
26th September - 3rd October 2021
This tour gives you the perfect opportunity to visit the archaeological remains of the Thracian civilization, which is one of the least known in Europe. But Bulgaria has archaeological treasures from many different eras - from Thracian to Byzantine and Ottoman.
Comments from our customers about our archaeological tours
I have come back from a wonderful trip to Bulgaria. I am e-mailing you to say thank you for organising such an enjoyable trip. The weather was good and the food and wine even better. I must also give thanks to our wonderful guide who was so knowledgeable and organised everything for us with no fuss or bother. I feel I have come away from Bulgaria with so much information, I want to know more!
I would also like to say thanks to my fellow travellers whose company it was a pleasure to be in. I am looking forward to visiting Bulgaria again in 2019 for the wild life and nature tour, so please keep me informed. P. M.
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed The Ancient Treasures of Bulgaria. It was exactly the sort of special interest tour I had hoped to find and I certainly learned a great deal during the week. It was fascinating to discover so much about the Thracians and to see the tombs and archaeological sites first hand. Sofia is most impressive as a modern city especially with the Vitosha mountain as a backdrop.
Also it was good to learn of Bulgarian history during the Mediaeval period and of how Bulgaria was eventually liberated from the Ottomans and to see the later Revivalist architecture and artwork. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to travel with such nice people in a small group and our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. All round it was a memorable week and I would recommend Balkania Travel to my friends. Thank you for all your help and assistance with the arrangements. S. B.
We had a wonderful week in Bulgaria. All went exactly to your well organised plan including the weather. The Thracian sites were spectacular, particularly Perperikon, with marvellous mountain scenery. We much admired the local and National museums with extensive exhibits which were well displayed and informatively labelled, in English as well as Bulgarian.
What a delight to see the Roman remains splendidly exhibited in Sofia and Stara Zagora. For us the last was the best: the Neolithic dwellings and the burial at Karanova, stunning!
The hotels and meals were good and our driver/guide was superb.
Thank you for organising such a satisfying tour and look forward to further archaeological trips with Balkania.
